1953 Ferrari 375M Spyder

(Post Restoration Photographs)

Road & Track Photoshoot

Not only did we have deadlines for the 1997 Monterey Historics where we planned on putting Phil Hill into the drivers seat to race the car on Friday and Saturday, followed by the 1997 Pebble Beach concours d'Elegance on Sunday -- but we also had to get the car done early for the Road & Track photoshoot so the issue could be on the newstand at the same time. The car debuted in the October 1997 issue "Salon Article" with featured retrospective by Phil Hill -- the driver who raced it in the 1954 Carrera Panamerica Race.

Road & Track Photoshoot

The photoshoot was done at the Petrified Forest facility in Vantage, Washington. We wanted to find someplace with scenery indicative of the high desert as it might have been raced through parts of Mexico.

The finished interior of 0286AM. No extra comforts in this racecar.

The big block Lampredi engine of 0286AM.

Phil Hill blasting up and down the hill was photographer John Lamm was up on the hillside taking photos. Phil's driving jacket is an old military jacket like he used to wear racing early in his career. The jacket was provided by his longtime friend Henry Pickett who wwe brought with us onto the photoshoot for the day.

Ironic isn't it that Phil Hill, former world champion driving for Ferrari -- and Pete Lovely who has been racing against him for years and in F1 also -- they are the guys who get to hold the reflector shields!

Me blasting 0286AM around as the photographer tries to decide where to put the car to get the perfect picture for the magazine article.

My trying to position the car for the side sequence shoot while Butch (great friend, artistan and manager extraordaire at Pete Lovely Racing / Dennison International) is plugging his hears because of how loud 0286AM is.

August 1997 - Monterey Historics

After Phil Hill literally laps the whole race field in 0286AM's racing debut after forty years, it's time to start the cleanup of the dirt and mess that was created for the day. Tomorrow is its debut at the Pebble Beach concours d'Elegance.

August 1997 - Monterey Historics

Yup -- me (with the ponytail at the time) being my neurotic self in cleaning and getting 0286AM ready for Pebble. After months of time and effort and sweat and blood -- you don't want to miss a small detail at this point.

It's dark outside and we are still at work...

It's show time! Time to open up 0286AM for the judges to do their thing. This is where you find out in ten minutes if your past couple of months of effort has been worth it. Plus the judges will overview historical data and photos of the car (most are included in my pages here). Although we knew we could not win 1st in class -- we restored the car to the 1954 Carrera Panamerica configuration and lots points for that (but that is what it is famous for!!). If we restored it to its original configuration of red without all of the later additions, we probably could easily have won. I love the configuration we restored it in though!

August 1997 - The Crew

The crew of people that made the restoration and successful return of 0286AM happen.

(from L to R) - Steve Wentworth, Vinay Nelson, Butch Dennison, Pete Lovely, Mark Savory (me!)

At the Monterey Historics Automobile Races themselves, we won the "Monterey Cup" which is the car judged to have excelled overall in both presentation and performance. With Phil Hill in the drivers seat, 0286AM easily won the race it was in -- it literally lapped the entire field. At Pebble Beach we won the "Pebble Beach Cup" for the recognization of what we had accomplished.

Two quotes overhead from the weekend are what made bringing this car back so great:

from a famous racing photographer: "I've been photographing racing events for the past twenty plus years and this is the the number one memory in my career -- to see this car raced again with Phil Hill at the wheel."

form a judge at Pebble Beach: "I've been waiting forty years to see this car back out in the public -- thank you -- you did a fantastic job".
